Leather Terms and Finishes

There are two basic types of categories:  FINISHED or UNFINISHED.

Briefly, finished leather is first dyed via immersion in an aniline dye solution and then the outside face of the hide is coated with a pigmented resin.  Then a subsequent clear-coating is added.  Finished leather is protected by the color-coating and clear-coating.

UNFINISHED leather processing stops at the first dyeing process without any resin coating.  The unfinished leather is unprotected, not having either of the coatings listed above.

The qualities of leather~created by leather and preserved by the tanner~are superior of those of any man made synthetic material.

The 4 main reasons to use leather is as follows:

Flexibility~Leather stretches to conform to individual contuours, yet retains sufficient shape to provide support.
Durability~Leather resists tears, punctures, heat, cold and other stresses so well that it’s used in many safety applications where other materials fail.
Comfort~Leather “breathes” allowing air in and moisture out.  A natural insulator, leather protects against extremes in temperature and humidity.
Beauty~Leather, by its very nature, comes in a wide range of pleasing textures and surface patterns.  It also takes well to a variety of finishing processes, designs and color applications.  A rich “feel” and a pleasing scent also heighten the appeal of leather.

Be aware~the more the leather smells the worse the leather is.  Leather is sold off as grades from A being the highest.  Tanners will purchase hides to color in L/M/N grade and patch them, fill them and add so many chemicals to them it creates a smell to get them to look like a grade A.

Also, note that ALL LEATHER is taken for the meat first and the skins are discarded to our industry where we break them down and use them to complete the cycle and not having them to be sent to landfills to create more waste.

This is why PETA does not bother the leather industry as much as the fur industry.
